On Museum Trails

Museums often struggle to engage visitors beyond the static display cases, while cities miss out on driving foot traffic from cultural hubs to local historical landmarks. We built On Museum Trails for the City Museum of Požega to bridge this gap, converting passive indoor museum visitors into active outdoor city explorers.

We developed an application that serves as a detailed exhibit guide indoors and an automated tour guide outdoors, connecting physical artifacts directly to the city streets using interactive maps and geolocation.

From the museum to the streets

Traditional museum wall labels offer very limited space, leaving curious visitors without deep context. Furthermore, once visitors step outside the museum doors, there is usually no clear connection to the actual historical sites where that history took place.

We solved this by placing QR codes next to physical exhibits. Scanning a code unlocks detailed history on the spot and links the artifact directly to its real-world location in Požega. Visitors can save these linked sites to a personal route, turning their museum visit into plan for exploring the city.

Smart sightseeing

Navigating unfamiliar historical sites often leads to frustration, wasted time, and back-tracking across town, causing visitors to miss important landmarks or give up early on self-guided tours.

To fix this, we built a routing system that takes the user’s selected landmarks and automatically orders them into the most efficient walking route. Visitors get a smooth, continuous path through Požega without worrying about navigation or redundant steps.

Gamification

Self-guided city tours often suffer from low completion rates because visitors lose momentum or get distracted along the way.

We added automatic GPS check-ins that trigger instant progress points as soon as a user steps near a landmark. To complete the loop, visitors return to the museum to collect a physical “Museum Explorer” diploma and reward giving people a tangible reason to finish the entire route.

From rough idea to final product

We took the client’s initial idea, helped build the strategy together, and turned it into a final product with a simple approach:

Mapping the visitor flow

Starting with a rough idea, we stepped into the visitor’s shoes to map out the complete journey from the museum entrance to the final city landmark and created rough wireframes.

Co-creating the concept
We worked closely with the client to combine their goals and capabilities with our suggestions, shaping a practical concept that truly fit their needs.

Walking the path in real life
After the approved design was built, we built the first version and tested the app ourselves by walking the full city route to prove the entire concept worked seamlessly in practice.
